December 1972, Defenders #3, Page #1 Splash, Sal Buscema pencils/Jim Mooney inks, �Four Against the Gods� First, a big thanks to Josh Gray for agreeing to sell me this glorious Bronze Age splash that I just needed in my collection really bad! What can I say � the Defenders was one of the earliest titles I read off the stand and these early issues resonate with me even 40 years later. I think Sal Buscema did his best work on the Defenders and Captain America! I was blessed to have began reading comics in the Spring of 1972 and was able to read these issues first hand; it just does not get any better than this. The Defenders were the most powerful group assembled ever, even more powerful than the Avengers! Imagine a team with The Hulk, Sub-Mariner, Dr Strange, The Silver Surfer, and The Valkyrie, in one group! Those were the early members of the team until the Silver Surfer left a few issues later! Valkyrie actually replaced the Silver Surfer! This early Defenders historic storyline, was written by Steve Englehart, and re-introduced Valkyrie to the Marvel Universe!; This splash to Defenders #3 begins a vicious battle, between the Defenders and The Nameless One, culminating in Dr Strange and the Silver Surfer trapping the three-headed Nameless One in his own snare. Dr Strange then used his magic to release Barbara Norris from the monster, only to discover that she has gone insane.
