September 1972, Conan The Barbarian #18, Page #1 Splash, Gil Kane pencils/Dan Adkins inks, “The Thing in the Temple: The Gods of Bal-Sagoth Part 2”; The year 2014 and the first few months of 2015 have been an incredibly rewarding time for me as far as collecting comic art! Here is the glorious Page #1 Splash to Conan #18. The 1st Conan comic I ever read was Conan #17, which featured the first Gil Kane art on Conan the Barbarian. Kane was THE Conan artist for me because I read issue #17 and #18 right off the stand. I did not pick up another issue till issue #25 six months later. Conan #17, (which is my grail Conan cover (Kane/Brunner), began a two-part Robert E Howard Conan adaptation “The Gods of Bal-Sagoth”, written by Roy Thomas. In issue #17, Conan and Fafnir, the Vanir are stranded on the ancient island of Bal-Sagoth in the Vilayet Sea. At first they are enemies, but they quickly decide to co-operate and fight together in order to survive. They rescue a girl, Kyrie, and fight the high priest Gothan in order to restore her as goddess and queen Aala of Bal-Sagoth. In Conan #18, the setting is the Island city of Bal-Sagoth in Vilayet Sea. Conan & Fafnir slay demons and flee from Bal-Sagoth as a volcano destroys the island. They are picked up in the Sea by Yezdigerd. This Splash features Conan, Fafnir, and Kyrie as they enter the city of Bal-Sagath! It just does not get any better for me than a classic splash like this one! I have been quoted as saying that most Bronze Age splashes trump their covers – I rest my case here!
