January 1999, Superman: Peace on Earth, Pages #38 & 39, Double Page Splash, Alex Ross. This 64 PG comic features Superman tackling the all-important topic of world hunger. The premise was simple - a godly and omnipotent superhero like Superman should be able to easily solve the problem of world hunger. So upon discovering of the earth’s countless unfed masses, Superman plans to provide food to them from America's overproduction of grain, but learns of the political difficulties presented to his mission by brutal regimes that try to stop him from helping their starving populations. Superman realizes that suppression of their people is how these dictators retain their power over them. Superman finally comes to the ultimate understanding that the best he can do is to teach those in need how to farm for themselves. The human-made obstacles he encounters to his plans to feed the hungry were too much to solve even for the Man of Steel. Food for thought!
