December 1972, Defenders #3, Page #12, Sal Buscema pencils/Jim Mooney inks, "Four Against the Gods", written by the omnipotent Steve Englehart. Appearance: Hulk, Silver Surfer, Sub-Mariner, Dr Strange! Here is my 2nd glorious page from this issue, including the Page #1 splash. The Defenders was one of the first titles I read off the stand in 1972. Sal Buscema did his best work on the Defenders and Captain America in 1972-1974. I was blessed to have begun to read comics in the Spring of 1972, and Defenders was one of my first comics, beginning with issue #2. This issue begins the vicious battle, between the Defenders and The Nameless One, culminating in Dr Strange and the Silver Surfer trapping the three-headed Nameless One in his own snare. Dr Strange uses his magic to release Barbara Norris from the monster, only to discover that she has gone insane in the next issue. The Defenders were the most powerful group assembled ever, even more powerful than the Avengers. Imagine a team with The Hulk, Sub-Mariner, Dr Strange, The Silver Surfer, and The Valkyrie, in one group. Those were the early members of the team until the Silver Surfer left a few issues later and Valkyrie replaced him.
